Sure, you know it all by now.
None of us, and I really mean none of us would want to feel dryness on our skin (seriously, it’s not a good feeling) or see scaly patches on our arms. And that, my friend, is not easy. You’ve got work, friends, Instagram. And then Winters are here in full swing. Not only is the air drier, but the hot water showers don’t make our skin feel any better. On the contrary they just make our skin (and hair) scaly and dull.
But we can’t stop using hot water dude.
So I spoke to Dr Kiran Lohia, Dermatologist and Medical Director, Lumiere Dermatology, New Delhi who told me about 3 ingredients you can find at home, that are great to just keep dryness away (more than just moisturisers you know!). And then I bit of my own research to make the most of these.
Ingredient #1: Buttermilk
I know right? I am not a fan of yogurt but I know most of you are. A staple in summers, buttermilk, which is basically yogurt, has natural lactic acid, that helps exfoliate the outer layer of your skin AND seeps in moisture on skin and keeps it locked (yes, it works as a humectant)
How To Use: Since it’s pretty cold, I wouldn’t really ask you drink it unless you are enjoying summer on another part of the globe. Your best bet is to eat up 1-2 bowls: it keeps your gut healthy, which is a must-do for clear skin. If you want to make your own mask, you can use thick, unsweetened curd or simply whip it up a bit to make it thicker.
I was thinking, since greek yogurt is really awesome, can we use it on the face too? And blogger, Lauren Conrad agrees. Here’s what you need to do: Take 1 Tablespoon of plain Greek and add 1 Teaspoon of Honey (organic if possible). Take a cotton ball and gently rub it on face and neck. Keep on for 15 minutes and wash off for moisturised, dewy-looking skin.
Ingredient #2: Rose Oil
Rose oil has Omega-3 fatty acids and is rich in Vitamin A, making it ideal for both nourishment and hydration. It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial and works well as rose water or gulaab jal.
How To Use
According to Pinterest, you can make your own rose oil by taking bloomed 25-30 rose petals (make sure they are dry), and mix them with almond oil in a small bottle (10-20 ml). You can even add a few drops of rose essential oil and let it sit for a days in sunlight so that the elements fuse in together.
Dr Lohia recommends using it daily at night for a rosy hued glow.
Ingredient #3: Avocado
The fruit of the year is a tad expensive but makes up for its import duty price with its miraculous properties. Even eating half an avocado means nourishing your system of minerals, some good ol’ Vitamin E and much needed Omega-3 fatty acids.
How To Use: What happens when you eat fruits, any fruit, is that first up, your body and your skin, feels nourished and hydrated. But when you eat a fruit which is powerhouse of anti-oxidants, like an avocado, your skin’s internal shield gets stronger, meaning it can also fight oxidative damage from free radicals.
Apart from eating it, you can make your own mask with other home ingredients. Whip up a mask by mashing a quarter of an avocado and adding 1 Tablespoon of honey, 1 Tablespoon olive oil each. You can then add a dash of lemon. Apply on face and neck and keep it on till it dries. Wash it off with cool water and let me know how it goes.
